On Sunday 2 March 2003 we went out with some
friends and spent the day doing the Blombos 4X4 trail near Yzerfontein
on the West Coast.
I must admit I was really dissappointed, and
would not recommend it to anybody. Firstly, it was pretty much a farm
track that we rode on, and in my opinion one does not need a 4x4 to do
the trail. A 2X4 with a diff lock will suffice.
The fact that it was very easy to drive was not what disappointed
me most, as the whole point is to go out to beautiful places off the
beaten track and enjoy the outdoors. The disappointment was also the
fact that the scenery was nothing spectacular at all.
I will give the trail its due, there is a very nice lapa at a
waterhole to stop and braai for lunch. The only pity was that the
water in the waterhole was stagnant, didn't smell too good and didn't
look that great either.
One consolation was that there was a bit of an obstacle course
named Slanggat where we spent a bit of time playing.
I won't be going back. Here are
a couple of photos of the day.
