We took a day out during December 2003 to go and
drive the Babylons Toren 4x4 trail between Wellington and Malmesbury
after seeing it featured in the Driveout magazine for the first
time.
The intention was to take three or four families
out for the day, but it rapidly grew into a group of ten vehicles.
I can assure you that no-one was disappointed at
all.
The trail is less than an hours drive from Cape
Town and the scenery is beautiful. The trail is a mountain trail at
the back of Paardeberg and there are amazing views across the Riebeek
Valley.
The trail itself is mostly a combination of rock
and sandy mountain terrain, and I rated it
as moderate. There are however a couple of optional very interesting obstacles that
make the trail very interesting. I managed to get myself stuck on an axle
twister and put a slight dent in my running board.
I would not recommend driving the trail in the wet, as
there are a couple of steep ascents and descents that I think could well become a
slippery nightmare.
There are a couple of really nice viewpoints and
a nice picnic spot where you can lie back and relax and enjoy the
amazing peaceful surroundings.
Since we drove the trail, I believe there is an
interesting new section that has been added. I will definitely be
going out to drive it again. I would definitely put this one on
my list to drive if you have not driven it before.
Here are couple of photos taken on the trip.
