We went out to drive the Biedouw 4x4 trail during
September 2003 as we had heard that it is one of the best places in
the Cederberg to go
and see the flowers at the start of the Cape spring time.
Unfortunately due to the late rains, there were
no flowers to see, but nevertheless it was most certainly worth our
while to do the trail. It is a mountain trail with some really
spectacular waterfalls and rock formations en route.
The trail itself is mostly rock, and I rated it
as moderate. There is one steep ascent that takes you right up to the
top of the mountain from where you will enjoy really breathtaking
views.
After having driven the trail on the way back to
the campsite, there is an optional river crossing obstacle session.
The water is quite deep (about half way up your 4X4's doors) and I
elected not to cross it as I had all my kit in which we were going to
sleep in the back of the truck. The problem is not going into the
river and crossing it, but it comes when you come back as you need to
climb out of the river up a very steep bank, and one or two guys ended
up getting very wet inside their vehicles. Fortunately no-one got
stuck.
This is a trail that I will be putting on my
list of one that I would like to do again when the flowers come out.
Here are couple of photos of the trip.
