I love dune driving and Atlantis Dunes is really close to Cape Town so it is very quick and easy to organise a day trip out there.

We have been out into the dunes a number of times, and I must admit that every time I go there, the dunes are different, which makes it a really exciting place to drive. In fact as the day progresses the dunes change, the sand gets softer as it warms up, and tyre pressures keep on climbing up.

Driving in these dunes was where I really learned the importance of tyre pressure. I personally ride with 33" Goodyear MTR's and I deflate down to 0.6 bar, which is what I have found to be the ideal pressure for my driving style and vehicle in sand. One does however need to be careful that you do not do any really sharp turns to prevent the risk of popping a tyre off a rim.

The dunes can be very dangerous and I have seen more than one vehicle coming very close to coming unstuck. They definitely need to be treated with respect.

There is one dune that still seems to keep on getting the better of me, and that is the Horseshoe with its very nasty cross axled ruts at the base of the dune. Any way, one day, I am sure I will work out how to get the better of it.

The kids also have an absolute ball running up and down the dunes and they love sand boarding (be sure to pack a tin of cobra floor polish). Everytime we get back home from Atlantis, they are completely exhausted.

Here are one or two photos that we have taken in the dunes on our various visits there.
